Hey guys! With 2019 right on our heels I decided to take the initiative and get a head start on setting and achieving new goals! Recently, due to some health issues I’ve had to make some very abrupt lifestyle changes such as changing my eating habits, my physical activity, EVERYTHING! It’s been a tough journey but, I’m in it for the long haul.
While browsing YouTube like I alway do I came across a video posted by Lady Like of Buzzfeed that mentioned you could form new habits in 21 days. That’s it. Just TWENTY-ONE DAYS?! Sounds awesome right? Well, since I was SO inspired by this video to start my own challenge that I began to do a little research on my own and with a little push from those around me I have created (or joined in) this challenge I call the 66 day challenge.
One might ask, “Tune, why did you say 66 days when you mentioned the Buzzfeed video said only 21?” I’m so glad you asked because, according to cosmetic surgeon Maxwell Maltz who, popularized this specific amount of time during the 1960’s without actually ever conducting tests to be sure. Back in 2009, a research team from University College London conducted several trials of this 21 day new habit formula and uncovered an average time of how long it takes to form new habits. According to their results, it does not however, take 21 days to form new habits instead it takes about an average of 66 days to create a new habit.
So, according to science you’d need at least three weeks before new habits become automatic to a person. After doing more research and compiling a list of things I’d like to incorporate as daily habits I narrowed my list down to three things. My three things I want to become daily habits are: 1. Drink more water (1-3 YETI cups), 2. Be physical AT LEAST 3X a week, and finally, 3. Keep a working schedule.
With any challenge, I thought I’d give myself a simple set of rules to follow while doing this challenge so there would be no grey areas. My simple rules for this challenge are:
1. Stay Positive. This is gonna be probably the HARDEST thing I have conquered this year but, if I can complete this challenge then I can conquer my fear of change and wanting to quit tasks when they’re too hard for me.
2. Record Everything. By recording everything either in a journal or logging it in my phone I’m making myself responsible to track my progress; good or bad.
3. NO SHORTCUTS. Yes, it’ll be hard. Yes, it’ll suck not to have my favorite soft drink or food. But, I have to remain strong-willed and soldier on to the finish line.
Now that I’ve laid out the research, the amount of days the challenge will go for it’s time to prepare for the next 66 days!
